Disney and Masculinity
I love examining what we watch in cartoons but I think that their are a few flaws in this argument. I too am critical of Disney Princesses. Damsels in distress are pretty pathetic role models. But take Beauty and the Beast, a film that is mentioned in this clip. The heroine of this movie is Belle. She is a bookworm that is relentlessly pursued by Gaston. While Gaston is portrayed with stereotypically male cliches - hunting, muscles, bravado - he is clearly openly rejected by our heroine, Belle. In fact, it is only when the Beast begins to show his more emotionally open side that Belle begins to have feelings for him. This may be a result of this being a later Disney movie but I like the message the film is presenting as a whole.

News on the girly front ....insane bridal fantasies....S&TC movie?
Okay, I dont really like traditional wedding gowns. They are big, poufy things that are too expensive and you will never wear again. Plus, most of them are horribly expensive. I like to make fun of them. Also, women seem to use their wedding to act out some sort of demented fantasy in which they are princesses. Lame. So, imagine my horror when I find out from my friend Steph that Disney has developed a line of bridal gowns. Real gowns for adult women. With some trepidation, I clicked on the link. I was surprised to see that the dresses were not tacky reproductions of the dresses the princesses (Belle, Ariel, Cinderella etc.) wear in the films. So, if you want to pay for some sort of delusional homage to Disney and wear your fluffy gown, go ahead. They aren't any worse than whats out there. They are just dresses for wusses. But, I actually like one of the ones in the "Jasmine" collection. Ugh.

EMO scene kids?????– Why are we still talking about this
Oh FOX news. We already know emo is lame. The WORD emo is lame. No one has said emo in any sort of relevant reason for about two years now. It doesn’t mean anything. I don’t even know what emo is. A pair of horn-rimmed glasses does not a subculture make.
If you haven’t seen an episode of Mad Men, watch it as soon as you can. Now. It’s on AMC.
I need a haircut.
And finally, we have a transcribed conversation between Sergio and I. I wanted it keep it topical.
Fran:I’m excited for Stardust tomorrow. Go see it. It’s Neil Gaiman. Claire Danes is in it.
Sergio: I’m excited for boobies!
Fran: What?
Sergio: You heard me!
Fran: I don’t think their will be any boobies in the movie.
Sergio: Aw. Well, Rush Hour 3 is coming out this weekend too and that looks good. Perhaps there will be boobies in that!
Fran: I doubt it. What did you think of Paprika?
Sergio: There were boobs in that! Also it was a pretty good movie, quite entertaining. I don’t think its at the Hippodrome anymore, though, so if you want to see it you’ll have to track it down in the weird and wicked wilds where anime resides.
Fran: Well, I’m glad you got to see cartoon boobs.
Sergio: Indeed! They looked like this (.)(.)
Fran: My mom reads my blog you know.
Sergio: HA! SAUCY EMOTICONS! ( >( >O_O)>
Fran: What is that?
Sergio: It’s one Kirby being sodomized by another!
Fran: Oh. I see it now

Dear Milo Ventimiglia,
Please stop being so cute. It's distracting. First Gilmore Girls, then heroes, now this Fergie video? Plus you are making every other living male look bad. It's really not fair. I even dig the fake tattoos. Also, want to go get some coffee sometime?

stardust movie trailer
Well, I happen to love fairy tales and interesting things done with fun stories and this is a great novel by Neil Gaiman that they have turned into a movie. The book is fun. It's a quick read so if you are curious, I would just get a copy. I'm excited and it looks like it's going to be fun to watch and very beautiful. The costumes look great. Plus, I'm a Claire Danes fan. Robert DeNiro is also in it. It looks like they are expanding on the world created by the book but not deviating from the core story.

I wanna be your…car or why we already know hot topic is not punk rock.
So I was watching television the other night and I heard a bit of a catchy song. The chorus was haunting. It sounded like Iggy Pop doing a cover. Well, it turns out it was for a new Cadillac ad. The original song is by The Teddybears, a Swedish pop band. The original song is sorta this techno-y thing with the line “cause I’m a punk rocker yes I am” used ironically. I think this song is a perfect example of metadiscourse. Iggy Pop is pretty punk rock. He is perhaps the only living person who could sing such an audacious line and give it gravity. You feel it in his voice that he really is a tough punk rocker. He’s not even bragging. He has nothing to prove.
BUT the song is used in a Cadillac commercial. It’s what a lot of elitist would consider being a “sellout”. You just picture them seething in the background thinking, doing commercials isn’t punk rock. So that adds another level of depth to it. Then, the music video for the song portrays Iggy Pop as this sad, ruined, aged rock star being chauffeured around in a big black Cadillac wearing a designer suit. Usually I hate music videos for really great songs because I like to have my own images and form my own ideas for songs. But this fit the song so perfectly. In fact, it enhances the song. That made me sorta sad. The local radio station that plays “indie” music sometimes plays what I think of as the most annoying song in the world. It’s by MC Lars and is entitled “Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock”. I don’t think we needed a song to illustrate this point. I don’t think anyone buys things to look “punk” in Hot Topic. And I think people into punk already KNOW Hot Topic is not punk rock. So shut up. You aren’t as clever as you think you are.
Seeing a man who rose to prominence with his youthful exuberance and raw songs and smearing peanut butter on his chest and cutting himself with glass bottles as the elder statesman, the king of a starlit city inhabited by alien beings, a man no longer young in a world that is no longer right for him. What a perfect metaphor for the world we live in.
So much better than an inane song cataloging a store that no one cares about with only passable lyrics.
So continue to shop in hot topic. Buy the tinkerbell lunchbox.
